Spider Awarded Façade Maintenance System Contract for New Manhattan Tower
July 11, 2005
Seattle, WA - Spider, a division of SafeWorks, LLC, announces the award of one of North America's largest contracts to date for the supply of a complete façade maintenance system for the new Bank of America at One Bryant Park building located in the heart of midtown Manhattan.
The building, a joint venture between The Durst Organization and Bank of America, is the world's most environmentally responsible high-rise office building. Various leading-edge techniques, including water conservation using rain run-off and gray water recycling, wind turbines, and co-generation of power and cooling have been implemented as a part of the green construction plan.
The 2.1 million square foot, 54-story crystalline skyscraper, with its faceted crystal design, enhances the city's skyline but requires several custom designed solutions in order to maintain the building's exterior.
Spider's innovative permanent installation experts have developed three custom, crane-style roof machines placed on separate roof elevations and equipped with horizontal and vertical telescopic features enabling reaches in excess of 90 ft (3030 m) and 25 ft (88 m), respectively. To insure complete exterior access, Spider davits and sockets with self-powered platforms will ring the lower podium elevations.
These systems employ the latest glass-handling technology to accommodate the unique building materials. Independent traction hoists on the roof machines enable the operator to lift and position glass into place with ease, demonstrating an innovative application. In addition, a monorail has been designed to enable access to the internal atrium of the landmark Henry Miller Theatre.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2008
