Spider Fulfills Multiple Roles in Newtown Creek Reconstruction Project

August 10, 2005

Seattle, WA - Spider, a division of SafeWorks, LLC, is the sole provider of access equipment and service in the $304 million reconstruction project of the Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in New York City. Our unique capabilities enable us to be:

  • a rental provider
  • a manufacturer with extensive engineering abilities
  • an installer and service provider for the suspended access equipment
  • a dedicated project management resource with full-time monitoring services
Only Spider is able to fulfill the $1.1 million rental equipment, design, and rigging service requirements this challenging project demands.

The Newtown Creek project, a joint venture between A. J. Pegno Construction and Tully Construction Co., Inc., entails the complete reconstruction of the existing sewage treatment process and will result in a 50% increase in the plant's water treatment capabilities. The new facility will also achieve compliance with the requirements mandated by the federal Clean Water Act.

Spider's ability to design, build, install, and manage this project, the single largest contract of its kind awarded by New York City to date, earned us this opportunity. The rental equipment Spider has provided includes 64 SC40 traction hoists, each with a 1,500 lb. (680 kg) lifting capacity, and 32 swing stages. Customized platforms were designed by Spider engineers to meet challenges that the eight 8-story egg-shaped digester tanks presented. Because these tanks slope in two different directions, angled modular platforms were developed to enable complete exterior access. Adjustable rollers were added to keep the platforms level as they travel up or down these slopes, and the lifting capacity was increased from 1,000 lbs. (454 kg) to 2,000 lbs. (908 kg).

The plant construction work is scheduled to be completed in January 2008, while the entire Newtown Creek expansion and upgrade is expected to be finished in 2013.
