Spider Selected for Unique New Building in Downtown Seattle
October 26, 2004
Tukwila, WA - Spider, a division of SafeWorks, LLC, announces it was awarded a contract to provide a comprehensive façade maintenance system for the combined Washington Mutual Tower and Seattle Art Museum in downtown Seattle. The building is designed to meet the long-term expansion needs of both. The project includes a 42-story office tower for Washington Mutual on the east half of the block and 12 floors of expansion for the Seattle Art Museum on the western half of the block.
The permanently installed façade maintenance system includes a custom-designed roof machine with a 46 foot maximum reach articulating boom with powered luffing, slewing, and traverse. The articulating boom was essential to enable the roof machine to maneuver from one side of the roof to the other. The boom folds together, allowing the roof machine to fit in the machine room.
A lower level of the tower offered a design challenge as the roof machine is required to clear a high parapet and slew into special portions of the façade that are not parallel to the drop location. Spider's solution was to develop another custom-designed roof machine with a fixed 15 foot reach with powered slewing and powered traverse.
The building will also be outfitted with a monorail system with a self-powered platform, a fall arrest system, and a socket and davit system.
Spider has maintained a strong working relationship with the building's general contractor, Sellen Construction. The two companies have worked together for many years on a multitude of successful projects. Even so, Sellen's due diligence included visits to existing Spider installations in the Seattle area. These visits served to cement the relationship and Spider being rewarded with the project.
Construction of the building will be completed in 2006.
