Spider to Supply Building Maintenance Unit
on Chicago's New Crown Jewel
February 6, 2006
Seattle, WA - Spider, a division of SafeWorks, LLC, has been awarded the contract to provide a complete façade maintenance system on the new One Museum Park building in Chicago.
From the first phase of development, this 67-story condominium was destined to be the tallest residential building in Chicago's lakefront neighborhood and the crown jewel of the city's famous skyline. To accomplish such ambitious goals, the architect, Pappageorge/Haymes, included various architectural features that indeed achieved aesthetic glory, but at the same time presented access challenges to façade maintenance designers. The most prominent challenge was the 5-story football-shaped steel structure atop the facility.
To enable exterior access around this feature on the main roof elevation, Spider's experienced engineers custom designed an innovative roof machine. The crane style building maintenance unit consisted of a boom that telescopes horizontally up to 82 feet and hydraulically luffs upwards of 20 feet. This will enable the boom to telescope out while stabilizing the platform at various levels. In addition, the machine's visibility will be minimized to accommodate the customer's aesthetic needs and maintain the elegant reputation of the neighborhood.
To complete this façade maintenance system, Spider will also supply and install davits and sockets with self-powered platforms, tiebacks and fall arrest equipment.
Spider's contributions to this project will be completed in October 2007.
