Spider's Technical Expertise Wins Complex Permanent Installation Contract for Cira Centre in Philadelphia

February 11, 2005

Tukwila, WA - Spider, a division of SafeWorks, LLC, announces it was awarded a contract to provide a customized exterior building maintenance system for the new Cira Centre. The building is the flagship project in Philadelphia's plan to revitalize its corporate community.

Spider is providing the building with one of the largest and most complex building maintenance systems in the United States. The building has facets "cut" into two sides of the building creating the look of a cut gemstone, resulting in roof machine drops with positive and negative slopes. Spider's solution for this problem is to use a caterpillar-type stabilization system with three points that crawl along the façade, insuring at least two points of the platform are always engaged to the curtain wall.

Additionally, the roof is an inclined glass enclosure, creating another challenge. Spider engineered a system allowing the roof machine to telescope 15 feet vertically from a cut out portion of the glass roof while luffing up 15°. The machine can also telescope 98 feet horizontally, permitting full façade coverage. "This is the first system of its kind in the United States," explained Keenan Potter, Spider Permanent Installations Product Manager. "We look forward to continuing to work with clients on the design challenges new and innovative building design present."

The building will be completed in December of 2005.
