Spider Designs Custom Knock-Down Boiler Unit for Detroit Edison

November 23, 2005

Seattle, WA - Spider, a division of SafeWorks, LLC, recently engineered and produced a custom knock-down boiler unit, enabling interior assembly and increasing work area for boilermakers at Detroit Edison, the primary energy provider in Michigan.

Detroit Edison faced several challenges at its Monroe Plant in eastern Michigan. Four boilers were continually operating, but only two service machines existed. Sharing and transferring the units adversely affected production, leading to the demand for additional units that were capable of fitting through an 18 inch opening and carrying two boilermakers simultaneously.

Spider responded by developing a custom knock-down boiler unit. The reliable ST-26 Mini SpiderT was designed with a custom engineered platform which is stored disassembled, allowing the individual pieces to fit through narrow openings and be assembled inside the boiler. The additional square footage on the platform allowed two boilermakers to work comfortably in the basket.

This custom unit was delivered in November 2005. Spider will continue to service and certify the unit from its Detroit Operation Center as needed.
